Oil can?

Found this little steel can in a pile of stuff in my garage, about 6.5" high, 3.5" diamter with a screw in lid. Seem to have somthing oily in it which is whay I've described it as an oilcan. No idea how it came my way.

Slightly unclear engraving says NTGB (possibly NTGR) and below that  PSC. I reckon NTGB is likely to be North Thames Gas Board.

Can anyone tell me more about it?

Not sure I want to keep it so it's potentially for sale, for a donation to BECG.

Could it be detergent rather than oil? In use by the gas board for leak detection??

No idea what it might have been used for but it's now got oil in it. Something that looks a bit like like TQF gearbox fluid.

A calibration can?  Holds a measured quantity to the top of the screw cap.

Possibly, but the cap screws INTO the can.

"PSC" may well be the old "Petroleum Service Corporation" who have been around since the 1930s... they may be same as the Petroleum Service Company?

"NTGB" could indeed be North Thames Gas Board, or even Near-Total Gastric Bypass. Who knows ?

NTGB (the gas company) was founded in 1949, so it might well be them...
