Using fuses correctly

i was sent this recently. It looks like both live and neutral are fused which is a bad idea.

Very common, lots of houses wired in the '30s and '40s had L & N fuses.  
That's a handy place to keep the tools to change a fuse when it blows late at night, they must be correct 'cos they fit beautifully. Just fit a fuse carrier in the live and its sorted.

The screwdriver on the left is a neutral safety link not a fuse

I'm sure some of you have seen this before but it's worth adding to the thread.

AFAIK, my first picture was from the BECG archives, showing part of the mains wiring of one our trucks when we first acquired it. We have our suspicions about who did it (and worse) but this is definitely not the palce to speculate. I don't think the guilty party frequents vintage forums but you never know.

We have a neighbour, we'll call him Sidney Tesla. (name changed, slightly ) plug fuses are always changed to 25×6mm section of cut down bolt, (plugs never used them before, theres a decent fuse indoors), people only lend him stuff once. He has a big shed where he does his wood working, it has no fixed supply or consumer unit, but it does have a ring main though. How he uses it is with his 50m extension lead that he plugs in and switches on at the house and unreels as he walks to the shed when he gets there he  plugs it in to the shed ring main.

Yes, a plug either end. Not surprised? It gets better. Its two core wire, he told me, he says if there's no earth wire they are safer, all modern stuff has two core wire he says, "don't yew know nuffin gal?" Well he's 86, and got this far.

I have used a "death lead" with a plug on each end a couple of times, to tranfer power temporarily to an otherwise dead circuit.

That will be fine until someone restores power to the dead circuit from a different phase

Not only that, the link on the right is a flat-bladed driver. The shank, tapering to the blade, is clearly only just fitting in the clips. I'll bet the contact pressure is insufficient, and under high currents, it'll get warm.

They should have used the same type as the left, which fits fine.

Being a long-term beekeeper, I prefer more organic fuses...
