Hello

Thinking I need one for Ad free music to retransmit to the old radios.

Dont want a retro one like the Roberts but something more modern that can sit on the sideboard.  Any recommendations?

I know there are paid services like Spotify and others but is it satisfactory to just seek and store individual 'stations' that put out your sort of music?

I have a Roberts Stream 218, which looks quite modern.

I'm not sure if it's still in production, but I'm sure they can be found second hand.

If it's for working with a pantry transmitter does it need to be on view at all? I've been thinking of doing something with a Raspberry Pi and a decent DAC to sit hidden away by my main hifi system to play music from the internet and my local network. I think you can arrange to control it from a phone/tablet/laptop.

I hope somebody with experience of doing this (possibly Graeme?) sees this thread.

Some internet radios limit you to using Tune-in Radio. Personally I don't like this because it prevents you from hearing some stations. e.g. Radio Dismuke that Tune-in says "not available in your region"
We have a Google Mini that has this annoying limitation.

We have two dedicated internet radios that don't limit you to Tune-in Radio but both of them use very old Android revs and are really painfully slow to do anything. The newer of them is the Orbsmart Soundpad 400 and the older is the Xoro HMT 360 so I wouldn't recommend them.

I use my smartphone as an internet radio and it works well but requires a Bluetooth speaker or headphones although I do listen using the phone's speaker when I'm having a bath.

I use the Simple Radio app on my phone plugged in to an SSTran AM pantry transmitter. Quality is very good, particularly on my Hacker (obtained thanks to Mark H's influence) , but I've noticed the app only gives a mono signal, though of course connected to a pantry transmitter this doesn't matter. If I want stereo I plug my headphones into the phone and go direct to the internet station's site... eg. Jib-on-the-web.

Being on say the sideboard, feeding a pantry transmitter, could be an asset if it has remote control. Sit in the armchair and troll through all the stations that are said to be there.

Hi.
The Raspberrry Pi4b, and a hifiberry DAC hat work beautifully for this application. You can have a paid YouTube account that stops the adverts and use the online radio stations for streaming without you tubes ads. That doesn't stop the stations adverts though. The Pi can run all day with no I'll effects. The Pi4b now supports USB booting and I use a 120gb SSD with music of my taste on it, again downloaded from YouTube at 320mps so good quality in the main.

Presumably you control the R-Pi from any networked device. Phone/tablet/PC etc

Could you explain how Youtube is related to online radio stations? When I've listened to online stations on my PC it's via a browser pointed at the station's website. Youtube wasn't involved at all.

Hi.
Again the Raspberrry Pi4b can run more than just the Raspberry OS, it can run Android, some light Linux versions, a light version of Windows 10 and of course Kodi which is good for streaming and your own play lists.
It can be controlled with a mobile phone via the network. I've tried Kodi, Android and of course their Own OS, now not called Raspian. I'd advise USB booting and an SSD, fast and as much storage as you want.
I've a small 7 inch screen that I use but once set up it's really not required
After the the disasters with the Pi3 versions I'll say the 4b version is brilliant.
On another note the 3b is good on RPITX Which is a transmitter, it does any mode you can think of and does RDS etc. It can be used as a panty transmitter with the proviso you make a filter like a Pi network before transmission to filter out the harmonics. The quality is brilliant and it will cover from long wave to way up in the hundreds of megs. The Pi4b version is still Beta.
