The jiggly heads was such a good idea that Sony developed and renamed it for the 8mm, Hi8 and Digital8 formats.
I think the V2000 flips over the cassette, so even equalling VHS is good.
The basic 8mm is as good as or better than VHS. The Hi8 is slightly better than the later VHS HQ. The Digital 8 is just as good as DV and better than some cheaper flash / HDD recorders.
My last video tape purchase was a second hand Sony Digital 8 to use as a Camcorder, analogue to DV bridge to digitise old personal VHS stuff and also digitise / play the Analogue 8mm tapes I recorded on holidays. That was my 2nd camcorder. My first was a S/H portable mono EIAJ reel to reel with cabled mono camera. The Sony Digital 8 plays analog tapes well and in DV format does 4:3 or 16:9 SD.
For low light and SD quality the Digital8 beats any camera phone. With the advantage of a decent zoom lens.
Sadly my latest laptop has no firewire port, though I have one on an old PC still.
