This is prompted by the current discussion on screws for securing a Weller soldering iron handle.
In 1962, I built a MW/LW transistor radio in a wooden case that had originally housed a valve portable attache case radio.
My new radio had the knobs and tuning dial on what had originally been the bottom and the original lid became the back. I removed the original fastenings and put a metal angle inside with a single hole to take the back's securing screw.
It was a 'Just In Time' exercise and was only completed the night before I was setting off on my Scout Troup's Summer Camp - that year to a site just outside Rotterdam.
That back screw was the last thing to be fitted and, in my haste I'd picked up smaller screw than I'd planned for, so it wasn't a good fit.
I decided to rectify the problem by buying some new screws and went into Rotterdam with a mental metric conversion of 25mm x 4mm, which was what I asked for when I found a suitable shop. I put the pack of 10 screws that I'd bought into my pocket and thought no more about it.
When I got back to camp I took the packet out and started to open it whereupon I realised that the packet was clearly marked 1" x 8!
