Computer displays

Ever since I got my first PC in 1988 I've always reckoned it worth spending money on high qaulity displays. Currently I use a pair of Dell 24" 1920x1200 side by side and it works pretty well. My Radeon graphics card has dual DVI which interfaces nicely with the monitors.

Recently one of the monitors has become a bit intermittent. Going into standby for no obvious reason. I recapped it last year but it didn't seem to help. These monitors don't really owe me anything so I'm contemplating a repalcement.

The choice is beween:

1: A pair of 24" or even 27" monitors
2: An ultrawide such as this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-LC34F79...B01L98A326
3: A UHD (4K) TV/monitor.

I think i want to move beyond a pair of monitors. The problem with a 48" or similar UHD TV is that it's tall. I won't be able to see over it into my garden. I saw Unreaaldave's big monitor like this the other day but he's got a wall behind his desk. I've got a window and I like the view. So heading for an ultrawide.

Has anyone used one? What are they like in practice? Any interface/graphics card problems? The image is a screeen capture of my graphics card settings.

I also like to have good monitors on my computer. I find most available displays have too little pixel height to display documnets in full page mode. My present monitor is a 27 inch with resolution of 2560x1440, I see the curved monitor you are thinking of is also 1440 pixels tall. This one has visible panel 13 inch tall by 23 1/5 wide. I have seen small curved screen monitors but didnt like it one bit as the reslution was only ordinary TV standard. I use two 24 inch monitors side by side for work and its ok but I prefer one big one. The one you link to had better be good considering the price...

Hi Jeffrey.
A mate's son has one of these monitors he uses for gaming. He initially had problems with compatibility with the graphics card so had to update that. I've seen his set up and although the resolution is good vertically on some inputs/films/games its lacking horizontally. Don't ask me the size but its a big monitor. To be fair I'd not consider it I just didn't like it but that's just a personal view.
My 12 year old USA Sony 32 inch does me nicely in the shed and does 2k x 1.3k or thereabouts (forget the actual res offhand) so it stays till it breaks.

My present 2x24" setup give me the equivalent of 41" wide by 12.75" high. If this was a single ultrawide monitor then it would have a 43" diagonal. I was surprised at how close the diagonal is to the width at those sort of aspect ratios.

PS: The most I ever spent on a monitor was not far short of £1000. That was a lovely 20" 1600x1200 LaCie, bought when 20" was a pretty exotic size for an LCD. It repalced a 19" CRT. I still have it and after a re-cap it still works really well.

Hi.
If you remember, around 2004 all the remaining Sony service departments (SES) closed. Walter Fleming and Ken Bowie contacted me and said to come up and take what you want. Myself and Bob went with a 7.5 tonne lorry and filled it, all the manuals, filing cabinets, spares test equipment etc. I landed up with a Sony CRT monitor, boy it was good, only lasted two years though.

Some of those big CRT monitors were really good but you needed a huge desk and a strong one too. When comparing CRT to LCD sizes remember that for LCDs the size is the actual visible diagonal while for CRTs it's over the glassware. Visible picture often an inch or more less. My biggest CRT was 19", about 18" visible. Going from that to a 20" 1600x1200 LCD was astonishing. DVI made a big difference too. Using VGA connection the pictures were soft. Had to muck around with some software called cleartype(?) to get best rendering of small text on the LCD. That's all automatic now.

A word of warning about curved screens. I bought a 4K Samsung 49" TV with curved screen last year and although the picture is excellent, any reflections get smeared horizontally which aggravates the effect.
I should have realised this before buying.

When you say reflections, presumably you mean of objects and/or lights in the room.
