Hi.
I was very kindly given a Hacker Mayflower Two today from Peter (Eddystone Pete)
Peter had already done some work on the set replacing capacitors and the tuning indicator.
On trying it here reception wasn't great on its internal aerial but fine on my loft FM aerial. I decided to give it a wee look over in the shed this afternoon and did a couple of things to really improve matters.
Firstly was to replace the ECC85 with an ECC88, that made a huge difference to sensitivity and the magic eye closed up well on tuning in any of the BBC stations. The set drifted a bit on warm up on both the 85 and the new 88 and the HT on the tuner gradually dropped after a few minutes. This was traced to the 6.8k 2 watt HT feed resistors to the front end, they read 9k each when cold and rose to 10k each with heat from my hairdryer. Two new 6.8K 3 watt WW resistors effected a full cure with no drift. The AFC doesen't seem to work but it's of little consequence as it's virtually drift free anyway.
Its a cracking set especially as Peter has removed the 250pf De-emphasis cap, this improves the top end greatly and of course the top cut control can be used if its a bit toppy, fine on my cloth ears, bass is excellent if the set is positioned properly and very strong in a corner.
A great set to have in the collection.
Many thanks Peter.
