Websites sometimes 'freeze'(PC has to be rebooted)

For some time now, this and other websites will sometimes 'freeze' i.e. they don't respond to the mouse or keyboard, etc., unless the computer is switched off, left for maybe a minute or so, then rebooted.  Now I suspect this is a case of missing or corrupted data, but haven't the knowledge or time to check if this is true.  Occasionally I also get messages to the effect 'Firefox seems slow to start', for which the remedy seems to be clearing the cache of all my stored sites, which I like to have so those I visit regularly can be accessed via the dropdown list.  IIRC, the problem never arose with W7, but is a frequent happening with W10.  Anyone know why, and how to fix it??

I'm not massively into computers but my experience with Windows 10 was not a happy one. I have a 2 year old Asus X553 laptop that came with 10 and it was dreadful. Same issues as you plus many other annoying issues. If your PC is slow or old with a low spec I'd imagine that would compound the issues.
No doubt others will say its your antivirus or CC cleaner or all those resource robbing things you need on Windows to keep safe.
For me I moved to Linux Mint, do the updates that appear in the taskbar and include the Kernal ones and you'll have a PC that will run perfectly and safely. Download a live disc making sure to down load the right one (X32 or X64) dependent on your machine and run it as a live disc to see if you like the feel of it.
Many windows programs won't run but Linux have equivalents like open office that are all free and compatible with windows office.

I use Windows 10, and use three browsers, IE, Edge and Firefox. I'm using IE at the moment. IE has a tendency to lock up, sometimes the only way to kill it is via Control/Alt/Delete and Task Manager. Why do I still bother with IE? Because Microsoft want everyone to use Edge, and I'm an awkward sod..............

I, too, sometimes use Edge, and, less frequently, IE. Haven't had similar problems with either. but in fairness, I don't use them often enough, or long enough at one session, to know if they suffer from the same problems.

I was at a friend's palce recently and he had similar problems to Old sparky, except that it was sometimes necessary to pull the mains and start again. His machine runs W10. I did the obvious MSCONFIG checks to see that nothing excessive was starting at boot time. Much of the time his PC would run just fine, sometimes it all but locked up. Seemed to be worst when using Firefox (his preferred browser). Similar symptoms can have diverse causes. I was unable to help him further.

Andy, using IE definitely marks you out as awkward. I can't give chapter and verse but IE is very much a 3rd rate browser by today's standards. There is a choice of 3 modern mainstream browsers for PC - Firefox, Chrome and Edge. I use FF and Chrome occasionally. Safari is commonplace for Mac but not PC, other browsers are available.

Moving from Windows to Linux is a different question. i've thought about doing so myself and have played with Linux occasionally but havn't made the leap. I'm still on W7.

I have had Firefox crash occasionally but as I am running Linux it only requires Firefox to be restarted and not a full reboot.
It usually clears up again with the next revision of Firefox.
If I keep getting trouble the next thing I go for is the desktop unit power supply/MB caps but more often an upgrade.
Desktop units are cheap to upgrade so it does not take much provocation to upgrade one.

If like me you are computing on a budget, my new computer I got for Christmas was a 2013 model, dont use windows 10 it is still being "Beta tested" by the mugs users.
Disable all updates and only update when you want/need to. It saves the PC being busy when you want max computing power.
It may also help stop a bad upgrade being installed.  I am convinced that software writers do no proper bug fixing and testing of software, they just release after the beta1 version and rely on mugs user feedback to find the bugs. The large manufacturers are the worst for this, they dont seem to care about their reputation because they have too large a share of the market. HP are a fine example with the software and hardware of their scanners and printers.

A few minutes ago, whilst on GVR , the screen froze (for the first time in over a week), and I noticed in the botton=m L.H. corner of the screen 'javascript (void). Would this be the reason the screen freezes necessitating a reboot?

In short, no.

In the same way that some people seem to pick up colds and bugs much more easily than others, some people seem to attract computer problems. Bearing in mind one of your recent threads on UKVRRR, I would reinstall W10 from scratch. You can follow the instructions here:

You will need a USB memory stick of at least 8GB capacity.

Make a secure copy of all your data, and let the installation routine reformat your hard disc. You will need to reinstall your core software afterwards (Firefox, etc) and copy your data back on again, but it will be well worth the effort.

Based on your previous computer history, I don't think it's worth trying any other course of action. Just rebuild it - it will be like new again.
