Never mind smart meters, what about ordinary electronic leccy meters like I've got. They'll be using the same kinds of sensors as the smart meters, just that they can't transmit their readings.

There's an article behind a paywall here:
http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/6256...eload=true More articles: http://www.radianresearch.com/white_pape...tercal.pdf http://www.mantenimientomundial.com/site...monics.pdf The overall conclusion is that the picture is confused. There has always been distortion of the mains waveform (all those TVs with half wave rectifiers for a start) but now we've got many and varied types of distortion from switchmode PSUs in everything from LED lights to washing machines.

There appears to be issues with smart meters and houses that are fitted with LED replacements, something to do with the smart meter over rating how much power has been used.
Our supplier is starting to mouth off (Scottish & Southern) that Smart meters will be available shortly. I don't want one. I have an account where I send at the beginning of the month the meter reading direct to the internet based account and it gives me an instant bill of how much I've burnt plus a future use estimate based on that usage. It works for me, why break the wheel?

An article in The Register also reports the problem:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/03/06...prove_dim/ Contains a nice reference to the history of metering: https://www.metering.com/features/the-hi...ity-meter/

It would seem that this applies to all electronic meters not just smart ones. Now that could be very interesting as we have 15 used electronic meters installed on the moorings. As they are all fed from one old style spinner disc meter we could check the combined accuracy of them quite easily. Watch this space!
