KB 429

Hi
Seeing this thread, http://golbornevintageradio.co.uk/forum/...p?tid=5534 reminded me of a chassis I have which came with no home to reside in. http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/kolsterbr_429.html

I wonder if anyone would fancy making me a cabinet for it, its a bit beyond me.  
I would then restore it electrically so it is a working example again.

Certainly that looks easier than my German Philips Annette series AM/FM valve portable chassis with no case.
Or my battery valve Pilot chassis (with separate 4.5V flat 1289 to power torch built into middle of side mounted tuning knob! It was sold for boats.

I have a 1929 suitcase model with no chassis and portable early 1930s Lissen Table model (two valve TRF, SG and Pentode maybe) with no chassis.

One never knows what turns up. I had a perfect Sky Queen (Mk I) case, no chassis and later got a totally disintegrated with worm and rot Sky Queen with good chassis.

I have all the 1949 & early 1950s Ever Ready parts identical to used in an Ever Ready Saucepan (all bought off ebay as scrapped from CE, K and T probably) and found a pot, knobs and round feet that match original. So I will have a go at the slightly later version that has MW & SW. Later two versions were marketed as BEREC and used three pieces of hammerite painted galvanised (or similar) steel sheet instead of an aluminium pot with front cut outs on base!

Hi Mike,
I reckon it should be possible to make a cabinet for this receiver. The radius edges at the top of the cabinet might need a little thought, otherwise it's just a simple box.

Here is a photo of the corner of a similar cabinet ( KB 426, http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/kolsterbr_426.html ) it appears that the ply sides are rebated into a solid wood corner piece using tongue and grove joints. A bit beyond my skills and tooling I am afraid.
I can take lots of photos of similar sets cabinets.

Hi Mike,
          There is a similar looking KB radio upstairs above the shop.  I do know it is an AC/DC receiver.  I'll bring it down to the workshop and examine the method of construction of the cabinet.
I'll determine the model number and will take pictures of the cabinet.

The Radiomuseum describes the KB model 429 as a superhet but judging by the valve line-up, VP21 RF pentode, PM2HL triode, and PM22A output pentode there is every indication that the set is a TRF receiver with bandpass coils in the front end.

Yes you are correct, there is an error in the listing on Rmorg I have proposed it be changed to TRF with reaction.

I've retrieved the KB radio from upstairs. Valves present and correct except for the missing 1D5 HT rectifier. A Mullard CY1C will work in this position.
The set was made at the time Brimar valves were being introduced into KB radios. Evidently Brimar did not make a 0.2amp heater high slope output valve so a Mazda PEN3520 was used. The 15D1 frequency changer is an American 6A7 with a 0.2amp heater.

Hi Mike,
no indication of a model number but the set is very similar to the model 426.
Same cabinet appearance. Chassis looks similar except the mains dropper resistor is mounted in a vertical manner rather in the horizontal as shown in the 426 chassis pictures.
