What experience do you have? Looking at previous posts, you've indicated that you're a beginner - that's fine; we can help. Indeed, it's stated in our ethos that we are especially welcoming to beginners. However, without the set in front of us, we need a bit more to go on.

Could you provide a bit more detail, please? Is it the same on all wavebands? As the Sovereign III consists of two separate tuners for AM and FM, knowing that might help us to narrow down the fault. If it's the same on AM (LW/MW) and FM, then that points to an audio fault.

What, if any test equipment do you have access to? If you need advice about buying some cheap-but-good stuff to get you started, we can guide you.

Are you sure the batteries are good? Have you got another set so we can try swapping the audio amp? As well as the Sovereign III, the same amplifier is used in the Super-Sovereign, Black Knight and Silver Knight.

I wounder if you can expand on the info .
Do you mean that with the volume turned to full that you can hear the station but it is quiet ?
Is the sound distorted?
Are the symptoms present an all wave lengths?

thank you for reply, I have had the radio for two days only,I have not sorry to say properly looked at it,on switching on with a mains power supply giving out 11.6 volts, on FM the volume is very low,almost full on,does not seem to be distorted being a complete ignoramus I dashed off a quick question not realizing that more information is required.

i have a small volt/ohm meter, and not much else, I will have a closer look and let you know the findings.

I'm not too sure about the Sovereign III but most of the large Hackers and Roberts use 2 PP9s as battery supply and the mains unit should be an 18VDC unit. Using only 12V would almost certainly give yu the symptom you are describing!

The Sovereign III is a 12 volt set I think (8 x 1.5 volt batteries, or 12 volt DC supply).

To all who looked and replied, an update to sovereign 111 low sound, radio appears original,(serial no 05925) new power supply giving 12.95 volts.

Acting on a whim I took out the amp board and cleaned the contacts,which were a dark color,reinstalled,sound was better.there was a slight distortion ,(warbling!?) , also started motor boating severe to me but stopped when I jiggled the bass control.

There is now good volume on all bands, unless there is an underlying problem I am now happier with radio.

On an aside, I am typing this on the opera browser, the print is so faint i I Can barely see ,does anyone else have this problem,or is it unique to my machine?
