DVLA Beta On-Line change of ownership

Bought a new to me van and the sales guy wanted to tax it for Sun 1st, so I could collect it, but of course PO are shut.  So me, “Why not do the V5C transfer On-Line” and then I will tax it On-Line”.  Sounds good and in no time he had done it with an E-Mail from the Tax people including an 11 digit code.
 
But a van I now own (but not yet paid for) cant be taxed On-Line yet !!   The 11 digit code refers to the old V5C and after talking to the snotty Clerk at Swansea he said you now need a 12 digit code.  "Can I have one please".  It will come on the new V5C posted to you!!
This can take up to 2 weeks and apart from having no van I will still have to tax it from the 1st of May and potentially lose two weeks payment.

Yes! They say the system is in Beta but surely a junior Systems guy could have thought it out better than this.  Notice how they always come out on the winning side.

Sent them requested feedback, fat lot of good it will do me.

In the old days you just bought what tax was on the vehicle and away you went, after sorting insurance and filling out the transfer.

It's all down to change of ownership and the new rules regarding the non transference of VED. You will be able to re tax the vehicle in the first instance in a Post office, awkward I know but actually no different to what's been happening for years.
If you used the 11 digit number from the V5 it would then be in the last owners name and you would loose the refund once in your name, it would go the the previous owner!!!

Yes! I appreciate that Trevor but first I have to wait for new documents !! "Up to two weeks" and potentially I pay £40 of tax for nothing. Then I can do it at the PO or on-line and that's easier for me ...

Hi Gary.
You don't need to wait for the new documents! take the V5 green tear off slip a filled in V10 form your MOT & Insurance (not needed if it shows up up on the system though) and take it to the post office and you'll get your tax there and then so long as you pay for it , they will then send on the forms and you'll receive a new V5 in your name in 4 - 6 weeks.

You make it sound easy Trevor but the dealer with the Green slip is 80 miles away and I'm here with another van and I don't want to change insurance until the new van is taxed. As to filling in a V10 form I don't have one and really its now a mess, not my fault, just the new not well though out On-Line Beta system. And talking to DVLA hope you get a lady as the two guys I spoke to wouldn't have a job in civvy street, makes all those Indian guys at the call centres a pleasure to deal with in comparison. I'm weary of it and have been well messed about by Ebay supposed buyers for the old van. There is some real low life out there ... never try and sell another vehicle through Ebay although I did do it once and it worked easy peasy. Real nice guy who was more interested in exploring our garden with my wife than the Honda Accord estate (marvellous car, amazingly it was 10 years old with 90K up and only had one tiny stone dent in a door panel, it lead a charmed life).

So I'm just going to lay back, do some electronics and have a few beers and wait for the new V5C to turn up. They win but Hey! I have much more taxing (pun intended) issues going on.

Hi Gary.
The beers and playing with electronics sound good.
You can download the form though and don't forget that the new van needs to be insured in "your" name these days before you can tax it.
