For some years I've used an Evoluent vertical mouse. This almost completely solved an RSI problem I was suffering at the time. It's like an ordinary mouse but turned through j  (90 degrees to those who aren't conversant with complex numbers, or i  if you're a mathematician rather than an engineer) The idea is that your hand is in the natural "handshake" position rather than having to twist your wrist. Highly recommended and well worth it though not exactly cheap, about £60. Takes a little getting used to and definitely not usable if you're left handed. (LH version available too).

Over the last year or so I've been getting increasingly annoyed with the scroll wheel which has been intermittent and getting worse. Today I took a closer look and found that the rubber tyre was slipping on the plastic wheel. I pulled back the tyre and put a small drop of contact adhesive in the gap. It's fine now.

I've never tried a vertical mouse. I quite like conventional mice but I really hate scratch pads on laptops given that you are for ever having to ratchet them to cover large areas. That said, I'm very happy with IBM track points. These offer the full screen movement without ratcheting and for me represent the same comparison with scratch pads as reverse Polish calculators do over four function ones. A difference of chalk and cheese in favour of RP and track point.

I will admit that not all track points are equally good. A lot depends on the background software. I did try an HP one and found it to be very poor. Also, you need the option of Ultra Nav to get the best performance from IBM/Lenovo.

RPN has always felt natural to me, on the odd occasions when I've used an HP calculator. Much better than brackets or saving intermediates, very much how you'd work stuff out by hand. Don't use a calculator that much these days, certainly not for anything where brackets might be needed. Done on a spreadsheet instead where all those brackets can be a curse.

I use an ordinary mouse, mostly for the scroll wheel but mainly use a Bamboo Pen Tablet. I like it for the drawing package, Word and a lot of surfing apart from where large scroll is needed.
