I found early on that the little pocket transistor radios of the day could drive a much larger old valve loudspeaker and give a surprisingly good account of themselves.
I never tried the cardboard tube trick, but went ahead and gave it a go with what is to hand right now.
A kitchen roll cardboard tube, placed on end over a tinny speaker, and capped off with a pill box produced some decent sound - much better than the squawk emanating from the el-cheapo pocket tranny itself.
