Cause of 'stalling' when typing?

By which I mean that, sometimes when i am typing, on the screen will appear only part of the sentence being typed, the screen then 'freezes' for maybe 10-20 seconds. after which the display will 'catch uip' with what's being typed. I'm sure I've had this question answered before on one forum or another, but don't remember what the solution is. Can anyone tell me, please?

Hi Sparky, I dont have an answer but I do have the same problem. I suspect its due to some unwanted program hijacking the keyboard for reasons unknown. Probably whats known as "crapware". So I googled a solution and came up with a program called "Decrap" As it installed it set a restore point (on W7) It them proceded to uninstall all my programs!. At this point my bravery ran out and I aborted the program and restored to a previous point. I still have "stuttery" typing and slow opening of various programs and am no further forward in finding a solution. Has anyone successfully used "Decrap"?

Yes, there are utilities out there that will remove junk from a PC. But you can do a lot yourself to remove such unwanteds.
1. Have a look in all the 'temp' directories on your HDD. Delete the contents of those temp. dirs.: all files you find (incl. the contents of sub - dirs., etc.) , but if Windows bleats that a certain file must remain, do not delete it. 2. Have a look at the Temporary Internet sub - dir.: delete the contents of that sub - dir. and the contents of all its sub - sub - dirs. The above is what I have been regularly doing for several years now on a number of systems that all run Windows 2000 + SP4. Never encountered any subsequent problems in performing the above actions. when this happens press ctrl alt delete and have a look at the task manager .
I think the graph will show high cpu usage maybe caused by programs running in the back ground. if this turns out to be the case use msconfig to stop some or all background programs . I also recommend installing CC cleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download just the free version will do it will clean all temp/temp internet and other unwanted files. Rob T

Now you come to mention it, Rob, I remember the 'msconfig' program (if that's the right word), so I'll check that out. I may well go through & delete 'temp' files, too, All. Many thanks for the helpful advice, both of you.

Rob, I would install CCleaner, but their site seems to insist that Google Chrome is installed, as every time I check the 'no' box, and 'back', the 'Install Google Chrome' screen reappears.

Recently I installed CCleaner, which does indeed remove a lot of 'clutter' from the computer, but I've now realised why I got rid of it once before, which is because it deletes various items from my Firefox cache, including links to this forum, UKVRRRDF, BBC Weather forecasts, and a few other sites I use regularly. Rightly or wrongly, I like to be able to go to a 'drop-down' list, click on the site I wish to view, and be taken straight to it, without having to re-enter details every time, which is what i have to do every time after I've run CCleaner.

If you want to try CCleaner again, there is an 'Options' > 'Cookies' selection which allows you to select which cookies are not deleted.
I use it this way and can log in automatically to all my favourite sites even after a clean. The quickest way to build up the cookie list is to clean and then log into the site you want to keep and see what new 'cookies on the computer' have arrived. Jim ps No problems with Chrome, just tick the 'no' box and carry on. (Using the back button takes you back to the page before the box was ticked.)

I doubt that a few cookies will use enough CPU resources to slow anything down. Isn't there a built-in program that tracks CPU usage with a moving bar chart? Find out where the horsepower is going, and work from there.
