I've been asked if I can repair this home CD Autochange deck, which uses a 6-disc magazine of the type used in Car CD Autochangers. For some reason atray from the magazine was jammed partly in the mechanism. Having removed the tray and the magazine from the player, I checked the latter, reloaded the 6 discs into the magazine, which appears undamaged. However, upon re-inserting the magazine into the machine, and switcing on, I could hear motors whirring, bot the loading mechanism failed to operate. Does anyone have any idea as to why this might happen?

It the motor geared or belt drive?
Many are part belt and part geared.
On VCRs the motor has a belt linking the loading motor to the geared section and it stretches and slips and causes loading failure.
You need to gain visible access to the loading motor and see where the drive is slipping and help it by hand.
If this results in success change the drive belt.
An "O" ring will often do the job.

I haven't yet, checked how the loading motor drive is configured, but, from what I can see through the bottom plate of the mechanism, it appears to be gear driven, but I'll check further. Hope it's something simple, like a stretched or broken belt. As you no doubt know, some of these CD autochangers have quite complex mechanisms, and I'm reluctant to dismantle any more than I have to. I've no idea what caused a tray from the magazine to jam part way out of the Mag. in the first place. As there is no obvious damage to tray, magazine, or the visible parts of the mechanism, this could be a 'chicken & egg' situation! In the meantime I've ordered a Service Manual from one of the on-line firms, in the hope that it includes mechanism servicing info!

I'm not a member of VRAT, but, as I noted earlier I've ordered an on-line manual for the princely sum of £3. In the meantime, further examination of the mechanism reveals that there is no worm gear on the spindle of the loading motor, so it spins without driving anything. Where the worm gear went is a mystery, unless it's wedged inside the deck somewhere! Today I checked with JVC's spares distribrutors, and, as expected, was told that the part involved is no longer available. Hardly surprising, given that the player is over 20 years old!
