For a good solid introduction, I've always recommended the "Navy Electricity and Electronics Training Series" (known as "NEETS") - module 6 (http://www.hnsa.org/doc/neets/mod06.pdf (especially chapter 1, " Introduction to Electron Tubes") is an excellent and comprehensive introduction to thermionic valve theory without too much maths.
The course was designed for US Navy sailors who weren't necessarily the sharpest knife in the drawer, so the text is very accessible... You can change the "mod06" bit in the above URL to get the other modules in the series... HTH EDIT: Probably a good idea to have this in the library if its not there already...
