Lamplugh radios from Birmingham

[Nick]

I'm trying to source information about S. A. Lamplugh Ltd, Kings Road, Tyseley, Birmingham - they made radios in the 1920s (and probably before) - The RadioMuseum has the following:

Model Year Type Valves
Junior No.1018 1923?? Crystal
Junior No.1052 1923?? Crystal
No.1030 1923?? Crystal
Popular II 1927 Radio 2
Popular III 1927 Radio 3
Quality II 1927 Radio 2
Quality III 1927 Radio 3

They also have a photo from Wireless World from September 1927.

I'd love to get some info (even a radio!) from this manufacturer for family purposes.

Thanks

I have found an S A Lamplugh of Birmingham on a ship with his wife in 1939, occ. retired.
There is an S A Lamplugh listed in London c 1917, business appears to be petrol taps?

Sydney Augustus Lamplugh was my wife's great grandfather - he had two sons, Captain Alfred Gilmer Lamplugh was T. E. Lawrence's pilot in Mesopotamia and one of the world-wide founders of aviation insurance (British Aviation Insurance Group); Sydney Clifford, the other son, was killed near Ypres in the Great War (1917) whilst in the RFC (he was 19).

SA Lamplugh made lots of things, including a lot of leather goods (saddles for the Army, cycle saddles, luggage) racing car chassis for the Rothchilds etc. but until today, we didn't know that he'd strayed into the world of Radio, and was one of the shareholders of the British Broadcasting Company Ltd holding shares from 1923 until the founding of the current British Broadcasting Corporation under Reith.

It'd be great to get an example of his radio work (we have some of the other stuff...).

Yes, that tallies up with what I have found out this last hour or so, there must be one of those radios somewhere kicking around.
Sydney and his wife were on a few ships during their retirement, going to southern France, Spain, Portugal etc.

Just down the road from Repanco who were at 203-269 Foleshill Road.

I visited Repanco in Foleshill Road in 1999 and the factory looked run down and a bit scruffy.

Lamplugh mains radios are mentioned near the bottom of this pdf including what appears to be the Silver Ghost (S G) some Marconi valve data etc in the rest of the pdf.

Lamplugh at sometime had a factory called Silver Ghost Works.

There's a winding up notice in the London Gazette c 1934 for Lamplugh Radio.

Can't find much else now on the web.

They also produced bodywork for de Dion chassis in Paris (France, not Texas)...

The range of their activities is why the family is so interesting. We thought we knew most of it, then the radio thing turned up...
