Unknown piece of equipment

Hi Everybody,
I picked up at a rally this odd piece of equipment which contains 3 large looking valves with mirrors and lenses arranged with them.
The chap selling them didn't know what it was for and I was wondering if anybody could shed some light on what it did???

They look more like Photocells with all those pins.
I wonder what all the beam-splitting optics is for?

I bet it was devilishly expensive when new.

I paid a £1 for it at a local rally as it looked interesting, alas it didn;t come with any sort of control equipment just the three tubes as shown in the picture and a power supply.
