Fretsaw - convert single speed to variable speed

I have a single speed fretsaw, can I convert it to variable speed by powering it through a dimmer switch? Sounds logical, but..................

It depends on the motor. If it's a 'Universal' one with carbon brushes then yes.

Might or might not work - a dimmer switch is a phase-angle power controller - really very basic.

Depends on the motor - you may get away with it - try it and see!

Hi Martin, if it is a universal (series) type you can get limited speed control by use of a variac or power resistor.
If it is shunt wound then it will be controllable as a sewing machine type.

Many thanks for your advice Guys, not quite sure what type of motor I have hear, will dig out the screw drivers at the weekend and see what appears.
