As I said above, my initial question is based on the idea of perfect capacitors: so your suggestion does not apply - but thank you for your contribution.
Adhering to the principle of addressing all fundamental questions arising in Physics, we start with the idealised case, establish the fundamental facts and relationships arising therefrom, then slowly expand those theories arising to take into account 'real life' situations. But we cannot proceed to those 'real life' situations unless first we have sound theories in place which are based on fundamental principles and concepts.
