Wandered into a antique shop in the East End today as I was in the area...
Amazingly, large boxes of old ASRE (Admiralty Signal and Radar Establishment, Portsmouth - ran from 1948-1959) valves... like 100s of them... odd bits of glassware - very obviously lab experimental valves...
He wanted 10 quid/valve, but after some to-and-fro mick-taking with some joshing thrown in, we arrived at 2 quid a tube...
Everything was in mil-spec boxes marked as CVxxxx numbers - internet access via the phone was poor, but I got a bunch of NIB dekatrons and a load of 1940s audio & RF tubes for 2 quid each.... and a very old GPO model F ebonite decade resistance bridge for 5 quid... ran out of time at that point!
"Oi've got boxes of these somewhere", he said (he was VERY "Oirish")... I tried not to sound too eager and I'll believe them when I see them and he did say it'd be probably 2 months before he went back to his lock-up garages... I live in hope...
Also bought some Geiger–Müller tubes - 50p each! Loads of other stuff there - photo multipliers, image videocons, CRTs, hydrogen thyratrons (small ones and HUGE ones)... weird, eclectic, mix of wonders...
Not often these sorts of things turn up any more...
