Black DAC90

Hi All,
I've finally got one by chance which arrived today. I picked it up from ebay as project to be restored but couldn't really determine its colour.

The seller was as good as her word and it was packed in bubble wrap, part of a an old duvet and then wrapped with a length of carpet!

No visible chips or cracks although the speakers shot and the grille cloth is holed and torn (replacement ideas for the same type of cloth welcome - 'domino' type pattern).

I've now got white, brown and black DAC90's.

I put hessian in front of the damaged original cloth on mine. It looks OK and will do until something better turns up.

Local knitting shop should have linen scrim sheets, makes very nice speaker cloth.

I've also seen (and handled) red and green ones: don't know just how common those two are though.

I've heard of those legendary things too, Al.

The question is were they really those colours or where they brown ones which had been sprayed?

I've read somewhere, though a single source is never to be trusted, that towards the end of production the ivory ones were actually painted brown ones.

It was during 1990. I had a friend who had then recently started to run his own Antique and Collectables shop in Cheltenham: he dealt in all manner of things. When something electrical / electronic came his way, he always asked me to "have a look at it", with the general idea of getting it to work (if it didn't) and then electrically safety test it (and fix it) if it failed. That was the circumstance that led to the one red and the one green DAC90 coming into my hands: both needed a few repairs. As I recall, I did not detect any signs of 'paint': the Bakelite looked homogeneous in its colour.

Incidentally, I do believe that the 'white' ones were actually made in two shades of 'white': ivory and a relatively bright, pure white. I've seen & handled the 'pure white' one, but not so the other.

I'd heard of employees receiving 'special' sets - red coloured. There is no reason why the Bakelite couldn't have been red. Poo - does this mean I've to hunt out original red and green sets now??

I agree on the pure white sets as I've got one to restore although it has a lot of stress cracks. I would rather leave as is than respray it. It does look strange when placed next to an ivory coloured DAC90a case.

I dont know what the cloth looks like on a DAC 90 but I have some fawn cloth with sort of random lines. Quite nice really. You are welcome to a piece if its near what you want.

Guess the pic wont be accurate in colour.

Many thanks for your kind offer but I'm really taken with the cloth that is already on it. I'll take a picture and you can all give me your thoughts - I honestly think that I have next to no chance to find a replacement.

A word of warning about these. If the 2-pin connector on the back is put on one way around the chassis will be live all the time. If it's connected the other way it will be live when the set is switched off because the switch is in the Neutral. When you come to restore it properly it'll be as well to re-jig the wiring so that the switch is in the Live.
