Elpico Record Player - Is a PCL82 the Correct Valve?

Thread title says it all, really. I've been asked to repair one of these early 60s players with no sound. Don't know the model, but a PCL82 is surely a TV Valve. The original TC8 cartridge is still fitted so that may well be duff. Haven't checked further yet.

The PCL82 is a triode pentode with a B9A base.

Very useful valve. It's identical to an ECL82, exception of the heater voltage and current.

The PCL82 has a heater voltage of 16V and draws 300mA, whereas the ECL82 heater voltage in 6.3V at 780mA.

(They have the same pinouts).

If you have 16V AC across pins 4&5 of the valve base - the heater - that would confirm that it's the correct valve.

(Do you know the model number of the player?)

Just checked on RMOrg and, if it's an RP590, a PCL82 is the only valve in it.

Most Elpicos seem to use an ECL83 and ECC83, - the only one I can find that uses the PCL80 is indeed the RP590 Joe, which uses a metal rectifier and two stage PCL82 amplifier. See circuit below.

if its a rp 590 i hope the output transformer is ok as it has a hum canceling winding.

I'd also look at that diode. They do drop off voltage as they get old.

I see that it uses a half-wave rectifier from the sec'y. of the mains xformer, which is tapped to provide the 16v. for the valve heater. I wonder why they chose a PCL 82, when an ECL82 seems more logical - and winding the transformer tap for 6.3v. instead ?
Must be a good reason there somewhere - any suggestions, anyone?
