I have just managed to get this set working and am pleased with it except for the Magic Eye. I have tried two EM34 and chose the brightest, one of the 1meg resistors on the base of EM34 r28 was open ciruit. But the display is still very deaf, the tuning is lively. I then replaced c65 0.04. In the parts list c65 is 0.01. I replaced it with 0.01 but no difference. I did not have a 0.04. Most of the resistors are within 20%.
What value cap would be best for c65 ?
Any other ideas to the fault?

Set is working well now. I added a 1.5k resistor between cathode of V5 and earth and the EM34 is now very responsive even on the weakest stations.

Wouldn't that change the biasing arrangement?
