A truly remarkable scientist, I can only agree that more men like him are needed today.

The obituaries tend to concentrate on his career at Jodrell Bank, whereas I am more fascinated by his work during WW2 to develop radar (which of course led directly into his career in radio astronomy - this started as 'radar astronomy', bouncing signals off the moon and asteroids, until one day they realised that signals could be received even when they weren't transmitting).

His book "Echoes of War, the Story of H2S Radar" is a really good read, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in Sir Bernard and the subject of early radar.

I agree with what has been said, a sad day, I have been to Jodrell several times, it was always a talking point, it was not far from my home town of Knutsford. Thanks for the book reference.
