Another Auction Haul.

There was an auction this morning and I have done rather well:-

           

I keep saying that I don't want any more radios but I do enjoy fixing them so a lot of these will probably get moved on.

I only bid ten quid on the Bush as it's a big one with no VHF. As I don't have any sort of 'Junk Box' I thought it'd be worth that for bits but didn't expect to get it.

I'll report further on Monday when I've actually got them. Just where I'll put them is another question.

Luckily there are no more sales until late September.

The Bush woodie is one of my favourites and the Bush portable (the model No of which escapes me) was sufficiently popular to have been re-issued in a repro version.

I think the Bush transistor is a TR130 but there are a couple which look the same so I'm not sure yet.

I'd like a Bush VHF41 which looks very like the AC34 but is smaller and has VHF.

Oh, I've enough Mayflowers here to keep me busy - I'm sure Joe will be pleased enough with his once he's changed a few of the capacitors and checked the emission of the output valves (and the health of the bridge rectifier). As I've probably said before, the Mayflower is quite unlike any valve radio I've heard before - it's much more like a mini Hi-Fi system. The amplifier is ruler-flat, and the loudspeaker seems to be very well behaved. None of that boomy bass and woolly treble that other valve sets I've heard produces. Whether it's to everyone's taste is obviously another question...

I picked up one of these for spares a while back; I needed a replacement mains transformer, and the set was an abandoned project. The case had been power-sanded, exposing the plywood substrate in several places, and the chassis had been seriously attacked. I felt no shame in stripping it. But, a few months later, I picked up a set which had been stored in a shed for years, and had been almost totally eaten away. Inside was full of spiders and even a snail - dead! Components on the chassis were corroded, and the whole thing looked terrible. But, it works! Even with the original yellow-print Mullard valves and leaky coupling capacitors. It's amazing how nothing seems to stop them. I'll overhaul the chassis at some point, and then, I need to re-veneer the cabinet from the first scrap set (I will be asking advice from the experts!).

So, from 2 total basket-cases, another Mayflower lives!

The Sovereign II would give you nightmares: the back grill is missing and it's got a three inch round loudspeaker in. At least the audio board is still there.

hi joe ,does the tr130 have caroline on the med wave bandspread, for if it does it would make it valuable to collectors. the b.b.c put pressure on bush back then to discontinue production of the version with caroline on the dial, so there wer'ent many about , regards maitiu.
