Pye PE80 - aerial

Hi All,
Can anyone suggest a suitable, cheap, quick and easy to construct indoor aerial arrangement so that I can listen:ready for launch: to my newly acquired PE80 set that I have now picked up from Paul?

You might find the website at the link below of interest Rob.

It outlines the design and construction of MW indoor frame aerials. The one shown is 40" square so is rather large. However, there's no reason why you shouldn't make it small and increase the number of turns, though a smaller version wouldn't have quite the same directivity. It's on my 'to do list' to make a smaller version and teat it with my antenna analyser to check the frequency range, adjusting the number of turns based on the results, and to post my experience on the forum if it's successful:

People often say that have as 'long wire' outdoor aerial, by which they mean a wire as long as will fit into their suburban garden. I was always taught the to qualify as a 'long wire' and aerial needs to be at least one and a half wavelengths long, so on 200 Metres say, that would need to be 300 Mtres long, and few of us have that sort of space to play with.

You might actually find that just 15 feet or so of wire laid on top of your living room carpet around the skirting board will give reasonable results.

try just a long wire along the picture rail and if poss an earth connection works well for lw/mw and not bad on sw

Thanks for all your replies BUT its been one of those days. You know when they say things come in threes:
- The job change I thought was on is now off!!
- My Pye PE60 arrived and the dial glass is smashed.
- My main computer has crashed big time.

I've had no time to look at the aeriall issue so I'll have to do this a convenient point this week.

I use the screening of the television aerial wiring.

As well as safety, a three-core flex provides an earth which also improves performance. Fitting that is always the last thing I do as I don't want to damage it with the soldering iron or anything and I also prefer the chassis to be isolated while I'm working on it.

hi, ive got a picture aerial that was made and marketed by a radio co in dawson st dublin , over 60 years ago, its based on a primative wall picture frame arrangement used by french families during the german occupation, as the nazies dident want anyone listening to allied broadcasts, my version is known as an anti static paris aerial , and contains two coils , one for med and the other for longwave, also contains a variable cap, and some caps in the circuits, it certainly helps to give some sensativity to the old sets , and helps to spaceout stations that are on top of each other,
