Grundig arrival

I rang my delightful partner this afternoon enquiring after her well-being and was greeted by her dulcet voice thus 'Andrew, there's another b****y massive box in the hall for you!! It's not another one is it?'.

Ooooops.

Anyway, it's a Grundig 2035 'Hastings', a set I've been after since I saw Howard Cravens on VRRR. Should keep me busy for a while

I have had a similar one in the loft for ages, a 2043, unfortunately it needs a new
mains TX, oh well, one day

It'll be interesting to see how you get on with that; please keep us posted. For myself, I avoid Grundig 'anything' like the plague: it's just so difficult trying to decode how they've put it together and what goes where; I find Philips stuff much the same. I suppose it's just the Continental Way of doing things.

Hello.
I have 2- 2035W/3D/GB Grundig radio and the sound is outstanding to me they are a better sounding radio than the 3- Grundig 2038 i have.

Yes, I have similar feelings about Grundig - nice when they work, but very hard to work on and restore. Although I've only experienced the transistor sets - I'm keen to learn more about their valved ancestors. Lots of pictures please

Thanks gents, I've been jealous of some of your sets! I was certainly lucky to get this for the price I did.

I only had a short while last night to look over it before I had to go to dinner with some suppliers and the bad points are, the litz wires to the ferrite aerial are broken, there's some damage to the black screen print on the rear of the glass dial and there's a deep gouge out of the cabinet on one side. Rotating the tuning knob moves the pointer across the dial on all wavebands except when the VHF button is depressed, then it locks solid and won't move. I can imagine that's probably just a cable or wire moved by the VHF switch blocking the flywheel.

I'll have a better look at the electrical side from tonight though I don't think there are any service instructions available for these bar a circuit diagram. Lots of photos will be posted as I proceed.

Al, the features and benefits of these Grundigs are excellent but yes, they do have a certain construction style! I took the bottom access panel off before I came to work this morning and it doesn't look such a rats nest underneath as my Grundig 2066 does.
