Marconi transmits from Brean Down.

Hi, does anyone know that Marconi made transmissions from Brean Down in Somerset, i believe from the old fort at the end of the downs, although there is no plate or any marker showing this, i have put the link with the google listing here....Regards....Alan.

I have climbed these steps many times from the tropical bird garden at the base of the steps, the cliff pathway is a really nice walk on a good day up to the remains of the fort, there is also the remains of a WW II gun position.

Alan, are you sure that he transmitted from the downs?, I believe he only set a receiving station up, and yes, it would be nice if there
was some sort of commemorative plaque placed near to the spot.

Yes, he was there...See the Marconi Archives. Bodleian Library. I would say an historic event.

Brean Down ?

Now there's a blast from the past. I too have climbed those steps many times.

For years some good friends and I regularly attended a Pontins Model Makers Festival at Brean Sands, flying RC Aircraft and Helis etc.

We used to fly powered aircraft from the field adjacent to the bird garden, and gliders from the top of the downs. That is some walk carrying the model and associated stuff.

The cafe was a regular haunt. Sadly now however the end has come to the model festivals. It is all but a memory

I lovely place to walk in the sunshine too.

Yes he was there, goodness the view of Weston from the top going towards the fort, on that old road, i too have climbed those steps many times with the kids, a lovely place to chill out after you can breath again, its a pity there was not a decent plaque to mark this event, a bit of fame for Brean Down,s, thanks guys for your replies...regards....Alan.
