I'm posting this on behalf of Standunmj:-


Here's a lovely tranny I've been given from a neighbours (damp) shed.

I've got the cassette player working perfectly, but the wave change buttons seem to be not engaging, so no audio on radio but
plenty of hash. I put some jungle juice into the plungers on this
switch, which has freed them somewhat, but they're not making contact;
I'm told there should be a bar and spring somewhere that defines how
each plunger is seated but there are a myriad of PCBs in this set
that make it impossible to get at anything.

I'm not, it seems, signed in on forum since the format was changed, and would deem it a huge favour if you could post this for me.

Any advice from the guys gratefully received.

Hi Maitiu,

I think there may be some confusion regarding the advice you received. The wave change switches are unlikely to have a metal bar and springs. I think the advice you received was relating to the cassette push button unit.
If the set has not been used for a long time, it would pay you to leave the set running for awhile. The problem may be moisture related or capacitors may need re-forming. The type of switch cleaner used is important also. Some cleaners when applied can alter radio frequencies dramatically.
If there is still no improvement then fault finding through the radio circuit will probably be required.

thanks for that roger, the 4 little buttons to the right of the dial are fm, long , med and short wave, all 4 are standing up proud, fm and med can be depressed slightly with a change of tone [sound ], from the speaker, long and short barely move, none are engaging properly so no audio, the cassette player working perfectly, so cant be much wrong with circutry,

these switchs can be a pain the same kind are used in some grundigs apart from the contacts getting dirty the latch bar can stick. do not try and force the buttons down untill you have looked at the bar it can get damaged

thanks rob, ive been careful not to use force , if been manipulating them up and down to try and loosen them out, with the resultant sounds on speaker when i do so, ive been advised to leave radio on, for a period in hope of drying out or whatever, but their not seating or making contact,

i use teslanol kontakt und tuner-spray, german stuff, the can is twice the size of the uk version, and its also cheaper by far,

A'h I can see the switches you are talking about. I thought it was the ones to the left of the dial.
Yes, as Rob say's they are likely to have a locking spring loaded bar to lock the buttons when they are depressed. You will probably have to access the switches and try spraying the mechanism with WD40 to release it, if it is sticking.
