My neighbour asked if I could have a look at his Teac mini hi-fi stack before he slung it. It had become intermittent and no amount of re-seating of speaker plugs seemed to help.
I checked the speakers and they and their wiring were fine (relief, as the wires are cemented into the floor!).
In the end I realised that the speaker terminals at the rear (4mm binding posts, suitable for wires or plugs) just needed their outer bit tightening up, even though he was using plugs not cable ends. The 4mm metallic sleeve inside was not fixed as it usually is, but rotated with the outer plastic. Over time they had rotated free and were rattling about, spoiling the music!
