This could be a number of things, so tread carefully. Use eyes and nose to find it. Not fingers and certainly not mouth!

It could be the flex cable, the On-Off switch, the EZ80 Rectifier, the voltage selector, any part of the Power Supply or Output Stage. Do any powered checks with your hands out of the set.

I hope it's not the mains transformer!!!

I'm with Steve.
The supply circuit is all pretty straightforward, with not a fuse in sight. Also the mains switch is double pole so there's plenty of scope (sorry) for various bangs round that area, followed by the mains and output ransformers and the main electrolytics.

As you may know, I was given this set recently and it brought back so many memories of listening to my old PYE 75 as a teenager.

I have only changed 'that' cap and upgraded the mains lead.

I've been listening to radio 2 on it all week without incident. This evening I was listening to the set when it went pop, pop, crackle. Radio 2 was still playing as I switched it off and unplugged.

Now the set is full of wax and hunts caps, could the pop have been one of those?

As I said the set was still working, so I hope it's not terminal!

Any suggestions on the best way to proceed welcomed!

Well, the elctrolytics C58,59,67,68, The tuning indicator, c60,63,64,65, somewhere round there, hope it is not the mains TX.
