Any good free anti virus for computer??

The Norton avg has expired on my computer. They want £60 to renew it!!
Anyone know of a decent free download? The computer uses Windows 7.

Avast free download has worked well on 7 and xp alongside winpatrol. Down side- you have to reinstall every couple of months!

Last week Security Essentials let a Trojan into my Vista drive. After removing it eventually, I had to re-install Vista as it messed up my OS files.
I have now un-installed it and am now using Avast.
On my XP drive which is a back-up drive, I use Emisoft but that needs re-installing monthly to get FREE real time scanning. O.K. for manual scanning though.

i too use Microsoft security essentials on xp did have avg free but it slowed the pc down

No AV software is 100% secure. A couple of golden rules:

Backup. At least make sure your own files are frequently backed up. Ideally have images of your entire HDD available so you can easily revert after an infection. Good backup will also protect you against fire, flood, pestilence and HDD failure.

Vigilance. The AV software should be your last line of defence, not your first. Be careful where you browse, keep a regular eye on your bank and card accounts.

I use Avast free. I would be equally happy with MSE.

Avast has worked well for me since 2007 with xp and its free.The only down ide is it doesnt have malware/spyware.But it updates itself very often poss weekly

I personally run McAfee, but only because it came with my plusnet broadband package,
before that, I used AVG free http://free.avg.com/gb-en/free-antivirus-download
Along with malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

these two combined used to find most problems.

I've got AVG Free on my laptop with Vista HP. The old 98se system hasn't got anything and (touches wood) I haven't had any problems, possibly because modern viruses don't know how to attack it.
