Those of you here that have access to my faceBook page will know that Im very annoyed this evening...
Nothing too serious..but its a tale of not properly checking everything LOL!
Today I spent about an hour and a half reading and recording the next few installments of the "Letter from New Zealand" that I do weekly for 10 Radio...
I usually do a few read throughs out loud to get the feel of each paragraph...its amazing that writing sentences and actually being able to say them out loud are not always the same thing! So after the read through I usually do a final edit of the wording to iron out any problem areas or tongue twisters.
Anyway after this I set about recording the piece.... I wanted to improve on the standard I had achieved for the last run of these spots so I usually record each paragrph or two a few times to try out differnt tones and speeds...so it sounds interesting.
Spent a good hour with the recording and thought I had it all in the bag..however this evening I transferred the vocal element from my mini disk recorder to my pc for mixing in the music and to adjust levels to find that there is an annoying background noise...almost a rumbling that comes and goes on every one of the 78 tracks I had recorded :@
I tired to reduce the impact by re equalising the sound to de emphasise it..but no it just made me sound like I was talking through a tin can and th noise was CLEARLY audible and no good for broadcast.
So I scrapped the whole lot...but what was the problem? I checked connections as the noise sounded like some form of interference...no everything was tighly connected. Was it electrical interence from the near by house alarm control box or my pc. Moved to the other side of the house and did a test...nope the interference was still loud and clear. Tried different connectors for the mike into my mini disk recorder...nope, no change. I walked away and left it - totally puzzled.
It occured to me as I was watching the TV that the battery in the mike was the original one from when I had bought it about 11 years ago! I Jumped up and looked for a replacement battery found one and then did a test. CRYSTAL CLEAR SOUND!
So the moral of this story is to double check everything before you start - including the mike battery! Might of saved myself a very frustrating few hours otherwise!
