Regenerative Braking

My recently purchased 2015 Hyundai i10 998cc is returning 52mpg mostly in town and a couple of trips to Glasgow, it has a big tank for its size of 8.8 gallons which works out at 457.6 miles, I'm sure I could easily better that and get into the high 50's at around 65mph, the instant display is showing 65-to 75 mpg at that speed on a level stretch of the motorway. I'd say probably 58 mpg ish on a run equating to 510 miles, the onboard display is pretty accurate and I've tested this on tank to tank full calcs, so far done 710 miles in 6 weeks.

I drive a Ssangyong Actyon Sports dual cab ute. 75 litre tank that fetches just on 1000 kliks from brim to emty.
Its heading for 13 years old. Its 2 litres in capacity, and produces minimum pollution . ( One of the reasons I bought it ).
It goes like a scalded cat!!. In fact its the tyre rating that limits its speed. I do run pretty chunky AT's because of location.

SUPER comfortable, superb finish ( If a little plastick, although interior is about half leather ).
Quiet inside, almost no road noise and very little engine/transmission noise ( Its manual !!! I would NEVER own an auto ).

Peter, with all this talk of km rather than miles, may I be nosy and enquire where you are driving this Audi?

South of Spain. I may say that we booked a very pedestrian Nissan Micro or similar but they gave us the A3.
It has most of the bells and whistles such as lane assist nudging me if I don't indicate before lane changing and adaptive cruise control but it doesn't have satnav.

Yesterday we took a trip to visit someone in a remote village in the Alpujarras, Fondales and there was a fair decent to get there off the main road and it almost managed to climb back up to the main road on battery alone but there's no way it would have done that if I had been in normal auto drive mode rather than manual.

I still haven't sussed how to get a manual gear selection where it doesn't want to override my choice.

I've actually found a reasonably acceptable regenerative setting. The car offers D, M and S modes and D mode gives next to no regenerative action. M mode gives regeneration but refuses to remain in the gear I choose. S is an auto mode like D expect that it does have regeneration and works essentially as single pedal except that you may need to press the brake pedal if there isn't sufficient regen retardation.

I'm sure I've seen one in late 1960s or maybe 1970s. I did live in UK then.

The last time I spotted those invacars there was about a dozen of them in a scrap yard in the early 1980s.

Peter's experiences raise a bigger question. Do we want electric cars to drive like IC cars? My Skoda Citigo E has controls very much like a conventional car. Ignition key, auto style gear selector. The only real difference is the selectable regen and an ammeter where the rev counter might have been.

At the opposite extreme you have keyless entry/start (on IC cars too) and touch screens for almost everything. Not sure I'd know immediately how to effectively drive a car like that. IC or electric.
