Hi.
Although the Queens coronation wasn't until 1953 she was the monarch technically after King George VI passed, I assume that is why Bob put up June 52 but that admittedly doesn't fit. He passed in the February, perhaps Bob should explain.
The jubilee is the 6th February 2022. 70 years after the death of her father.

Hi Trevor you are right it was 6th of February 1952 when King George VI passed away but for some reason it has been decided to have a four day bank holiday from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th of June to celebrate 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. If you google plans for the Queens Platinum Jubilee there list of what is going on for the long weekend kind regards Bob

With a view to this event I had an unfortunate event today.

I like to think that I am a totally rational person but just now and again I tease myself with irrational thoughts. This happened today. I was running three sets simultaneously and adjusting the relative distribution of aerial signals for best performance. All of a sudden my HMV901 suffered a line collapse reducing its width to about 1". This set is normally very stable and reliable but here I was running it alongside others competing for its signal. Clearly a case a jealousy!

My first thoughts were to swap the line oscillator valve and the output valve but no change. Then in my depressed state thoughts turned to the worst possible failures. So I checked the output transformer and it looked OK, next the oscillator transformer and things were looking up for it was OK too. Must be the output anode choke? Nope, well that's good let's check the anode feed to the oscillator. Great! The 500K was open circuit. Raking around I found a suitable dog bone and gathered my tools and soldering iron at the set.

Having extracted the O/C resistor I then looked around for my replacement. I looked absolutely everywhere but it was nowhere to be found. After half an hour of fruitless searching I eventually discovered that when moving things in position I had placed the Anglepoise base on top of the resistor.

Well you might have expected things to come to a rapid conclusion after all that, but no. The combination of getting the Anglepoise to illuminate the spot and messing with head magnifiers and shakey hands meant that it must have been about another hour before I actually managed to solder the thing in place (badly).

However, at least the set now powered up with the correct width. Perhaps I'll think twice about sharing its aerial signal with other sets from now on.

Hi Peter.
Somehow this sounds very familiar. I'll put something down and hunt for it sometimes for more than half and hour only to find it clearly in front of me on the bench.
At that point I'll start talking to myself and Judy has sneaked into the shed thinking I've gone mad hearing me mumbling to myself.
Her timing is always spot on. Well at least I've not replaced an on off switch with it powered up and putting the last wire on and the TV coming on for a number of years....... Oh dear.

The attachment shows page 347 of the September 1952 Wireless World. A review of the National Radio Exhibition.
Apart from the Dynatron "Fulmar" which has a 17" rectangular CRT all of the other direct viewing sets have round 12, 15 and 16" CRTs.
On page 348 the Cossor 927 and Ultra V80, both sets have a 12" CRT.
So it follows all TV sets in use on June 1952 will have a round faceplate CRT.

I'm surprised that 17" rectangular CRTs existed at all in 1952.

If someone can find me a suitable Pam/Pamphonic set to restore, I'll have a go.  My favourite Pam T954 just misses the cutoff by a few months
It was launched in about September 1953, after the coronation. If nothing suitable surfaces, I'll use the T954 - it certainly looks the part!
And we will no doubt have a street party locally, with musical support from suitably-aged Pamphonic equipment, via a huge Pamphonic Senior loudspeaker. All very Alvar Lidell.
