Direct sunlight is indeed a problem as can sunlight going through a glass of water, or a vase as this can act as a magnifying glass and concentrate a beam of light onto the screen and pop goes the tube.
Normal running shouldn't be an issue, mazda tubes with 12.6v 300ma heaters get mighty hot, the heater itself dissipating 3.78w. Add in the cathode current heat from scan coils etc and yes they do get hot, the glass though is soft so should expand and contract without cracking.

Yes, glass is weird stuff, never had a CRT blow but had a big medicine bottle shatter in my hand under no pressure. Also had a side window shatter in this women's car when on a first date, it got stuck going up, I tried to assist it up, it shattered. Didn't look good. Also had a lass's nipper pee on my head on a first date, don't have much luck there, but that's another story.

Re CRT's imploding, how do they present a danger of flying glass as it's an implosion, not explosion? Ricochet's? As kids throwing bricks through CRT's was fun, as was throwing em off roofs.

I've heard of some people hearing a bang in the middle of the night & finding the CRT of their set had spontaneously imploded.

It still happens only nowadays it is the toughened glass in the oven door the will be found spewed across the kitchen floor.

Oven door glass failures are often due to cleaning with abrasive materials. These casue scratches that are sites of weakness.

The glass fragments keep travelling till air slows them or they hit something. Hence it's bits from the side opposite to what you are looking at that are travelling towards you.

I have had a glass shelf in a fridge "explode" in the night not too many years ago.
I once dropped one of those 1960s glass tea cups and it bounced three times. I reached to catch it after the fourth bounce only for it to go POP and turn to dust.

Kids these day don't know what they're missing, what with there new fangled LCD TVs. Not nearly so much fun. They've gone over to stoning street lights our way! Don't get involved myself, more fun overvolting a 'lytic cap

I am not sure how hot these things get but my answer to glass weakness is to use plastic film which will hold most spontaneous shatters and small shards. Is there any value in this?
