Mains connector data

Hi.
Mine was used on 12 volts in a farm by its first owner, allegedly when used on the farms generator the picture wobbled about and was unwatchable, hence the use of batteries. Mains electricity came within a year and a big TV was purchased. The TMB was put aside as it wasn't the accepted thing to have two TV sets in use in one home. Later on the set was sold on and the second owner fitted an audio output socket screened in a cod liver oil tin that still remains to this day, audio quality is very good both on TV and FM.

AFAIK the video connection to the BBC monitor version was made via a separate socket. Likely either a PL259 (aka UHF or F&E) or B&L aerial type.

That is what actually happened in the end.
I would guess that the extra contacts were there so that a posh mains lead and upgrade kit could be sold.
The BBC must have just come to the conclusion that one of there regular cables would do and the result is what we see now.

I wish you joy in documenting all the variants of concentric connectors used for DC. It's hard to tell by looking sometimes. Different inner and outer diameters, different lenghts, different polarities.

There is so much data on the net about those 'barrel' plugs I will save myself a lot of grief by ignoring them.

The ones I have got left over from a wall wart that detonated have logos and an arrow so that they can be rotated before putting the adapter on the lead.
A bit of heat shrink and a blob of hot melt is a good fix for a broken cheap wall wart.

So far I have managed to gather data on more than 20 connectors, mostly from UKVRRR. Searching on here has proved more problematic. The problem with GVR seems to be that I can only search on a single word so that entering 'mains lead' reveals every post that contains mains and every post that contains lead. I get the right answer but have to scan an awful lot of posts to get there. Does anyone know a way round this?

I have found a reference to a free socket that is similar to a 2 pin 5 amp but the receptacles are different diameters. Does anyone know what sets they were used on? It might help me find a picture. I do know that the old Eddystones were similar so not sure if that was what was being referred to.

Does anyone know anything about this connector from an HMV 1507 or 1508?

No doubt Mark will be along soon with a definitive answer to the search problem but my initial instinct would be to enclose the search string in inverted commas.

As for the thick/thin pin 5A 2-pin socket, Ekco rings a distant bell. I will be interested to see what other answers you get.

As I said in a recent post, we used 5A 2-pin flex connectors on the bench as they fitted most sets but just added a bit of sleeving or match stick when we encountered a set with a thin pin!
