Removing excess Wax

and by the way is it easier to use steel wool from a roll or pads? - I have only had small packets of pads till now.
And which wax is best to use, for restoring the finish, and for maintaining it?
Sorry for all the questions - this is new territory for me!

Hi Jeremy, i restored a console Murphy, using only stain, and Briwax, this wax is pricey, but you do get what you pay for, im not into wire wool, i use very fine wet or dry paper 500 grit, which does give good results. The radio i waxed only gets a polish as and when and it still looks lovely...regards.....Al

Burnishing cream is designed to clean, revive and rejuvenate highly polished surfaces such as French Polish, lacquers and varnishes. This cream can also be used to remove haze and bloom from most modern finishes. It will also clean ivory, tortoise shell, mother of pearl, papier maché, brass inlays and cabinet fittings such as locks and hinges.

As an aside, burnishing cream is used extensively by woodturners such as myself in combination with friction polishes. Friction polishes are applied to bowls etc while still rotating on the lathe after they've been sanded. The polish is applied with a cloth then the cloth is held onto the workpiece the friction of which generates heaet which melts the polish onto the wood. Bunishing cream is then applied to bring it to a bright shine, then the process is repeated a couple of times, finally finishing with paste-wax.

(Someone mentioned meths, which is a solvent for French polish and should be used with caution. It's also a solvent for the cement which holds valve bases (and top caps) to valves. The cement was generally made from woodflour and shellac).
