Hi.
Just tried Caroline a couple of minutes ago. Excellent signal here in the house, have they turned up the wick? Oddly reception is not weak as I'm feeding the signal from the shed to the house via that thin and lossy aircraft screened cable. Will need to crack on with the frame aerial into the loft.

Yes, absolutely blasting in here as well, they've either turned up the power or it's just conditions - I'm even picking them up on my Philips pocket tranny !
We'll see what happens as the day progresses on this dull misty day. Andy

you are receiving Radio Caroline in Kilmarnock far better than here in Geordieland. The Philips 472 is an amazing set, sensitivity and selectivity as good as any superhet receiver.Even has AVC! Philips remained loyal to the TRF concept and without doubt produced excellent receivers but was the reason for adhering to TRF because the company was unwilling to pay royalties for the use of certain superheterodyne patent rights? I must say that radio does sound really nice. Is it a single knob to tune it or is it the usual load of different knobs, like my early KB radios, to twiddle to get the best results. Mike

Hi Mike.
Philips were most likely the best TRF radios ever built, the under chassis construction is literally awesome. The set tunes like a superhet with only one tuning knob, such is the detail of the tuned circuits, the tuning is pin sharp and even stations 9kHz apart have very little splatter. It is on par with my Dynatron tuner that is 20 years younger. The incredible thing is this set has only had one component replacement in 84 years bar a valve. The front knobs are volume, tone, tuning, wave change and combined on/off gram. |
