They leave a lot out of the datasheet expecting us to know about the devices. Twenty years ago when the devices we new the datasheets were more detailed.

Indeed, but there is a rationale for this. You only want data in one place, so that if it needs alteration, i.e. a new rev level, you don't have to track & edit a bunch of other docs.

Hence there now tends to be a "family" document, or set of documents, then device-specific documentation of any variations or additions in functionality or behavior.

The union of these documents is the complete documentation - much more sensible and plain common sense.

e.g. for a lot of the logic families, the individual chip datasheets are more functional than electrical, as the common data (packaging, absolute maximum ratings, ESD, logic levels... etc.) is in the family documents.
