What peripheral cards to you have (video cards, network cards, serial cards etc.)?

Are all their drivers definitely up-to-date (all latest versions)?

Video card is an AMD Radeon R7 360 series. Audio, network both on mobo. PS2 keyboard, Evoluent vertical mouse. There's a Conexant fax modem plugged into a USB port

All drivers up to date, according to Windows update. Just done another 5 "important" updates which weren't around last time I looked.

Device manager isn't flagging anything wrong.

Another odd effect. Every now and then, maybe 2 or 3 times a day, when pressing keys, usually when auto-repeating, the's a bleep on the audio. (I have system sounds switched off - don't like all the bleeps etc).

I do all the optional patches too - they are often not security but rather stability related.

Do you do the optional patches as well as the critical ones?

There are 2 optional patches outstanding. For Silverlight and Skype. AFAIK I don't use Silverlight since I don't even use a M$ browser. I don't use Skype on this PC.

Some patches have failed. Mostly on 14/2/17, when I was installing and updating W7.

...maybe that was a bit hasty. It just shouldn't be behaving like this, I really don't like the failed updates.

In the BIOS, reset all setting to default (they should be at default anyway).

Did you check that you are using real SATA III cables (i.e. not just re-using SATA II ones?).

Have you run a full disk check? and a full virus scan?

• Run chkdsk /r /f and sfc /scannow
  

Those SxS errors should not be there either - It really does seem that there's an artifact of a previous driver or similar that's screwing this up.

I'd like you to run the Windows Driver Verifier and screen-grab the final screen - take the default options all the way through...

• Type WINDOWS+R
  
• Type verifier and RETURN
  
• Take the defaults on each screen until the last one - screengrab that
  

We now need to enable minidumps - 

• Type WINDOWS+X
  
• Click on System
  
• Click on Advanced system settings
  
• In the System Properties dialog box that appears, select the Advanced tab
  
• Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings
  
• Under the System failure section, select Small memory dump (256kb) from the dropdown
  
• Click OK to save the setting
  

This should enable the creation of a nice small dump file on the next crash that will help us to identify what is causing all this pain. The dump file should appear in %SystemRoot%\minidump (C:\Windows\minidump\) - there will be files there with names of the form miniddmmyy-nn

After the next crash, zip the latest file (or two) up and email them to me - they should be quite small. I'll also need the EXACT version of windows you are using - the Edition, Version and OS build number
