Macerator

Where I used to work such a thing was installed. Unfortunately it was American which had all sorts of unexpected consequences.
I was obliged to point out to the IT Director that we would never again be able to sell a Telephone System to Beaver Creek Mine, especially if it had a Snatch Line facility.
They took it out.

Planning to instal this weekend. Going to use an inexpensive toilet pan with the Grundfos WC1: http://www.screwfix.com/p/grundfos-solol...240v/7378f Total cost about £300

Looked at an expensive but very compact solution: http://www.screwfix.com/p/sanicompact-ma...240v/60994 Seems to be one of a range of compact WCs with integral macerators. Any thoughts? Might it be worth the extra £200+? Space is tight but perhaps not as tight as all that.

Stick with the cheap pan, ensure that you can slide the macerator out without lifting the pan away.
You would curse that integral unit when your guest (female?) ignores the "do not put anything you have not eaten down this loo!" instruction.

The humour is OK, factually it is far too pessimistic
We were agents for all the makers .at one time and yes, misuse will cause blockages but otherwise they are reliable and sensible.
The horror stories about unblocking them are exaggerated, our engineers used a wet and dry vac and normally sorted even the worst blockages inside half an hour with no mess including disinfecting the vac.
Properly installed the blockage can only be in the unit, not the pipework.
My previous home had a saniflo unit for a complete en-suite, power shower, basin and bidet,it never failed in 15 years even with a tenant sometimes, its a question of sensible use.

The bulk of the 22mm outlet pipework will be outdoors, with a slight slope down from the top of the run to the soil stack. I suppose there's a risk of freezing, especially on the vertical section which will normally be full of ****. The near horizontal part should normally be empty as it will drain into the stack. I could probably run the vertical section indoors if it was a good idea.

Some of our pipework from the macerators is necessarily outside. It has foam lagging around it and, so far, we've never had any problems with anything freezing. That said, most of the vertical pipework is indoors (though in a largely unheated area).

Having read back through this thread, Sam's earlier comment that it's important to Disable dual flush on cisterns" caught my eye. That hasn't been done on the our system, is it an easy fix?

If there is a syphon in the cistern you will find a hole part way down the flush part of it above where the diaphragm chamber ends, may have a twist to close bung in it. Anyway, block it up for full flush.
If it is a bottom valve jobby it is not dual flush.

I would strongly avoid any vertical leg outside that holds water, it will freeze even if insulated. Run all the vertical lift in the warm inside.

The problem with vertical runs is that if, for any reason, the macerator is switched off
and the toilet is flushed the pan will flood.
I have no vert runs and when inadvertently it was off it the macerator
self drained when flushed.
