Unidentified radio station on 1584Khz.

In the the North-East of England I'm receiving a strong signal from a radio station on 1584Khz. Playing classic rock and pop, any ideas? Frame aerial set to a North-South direction for max signal. Radio receiver used is the Pilot X65B.

Nothing at all on 1584 here, so if you're still receiving it I imagine it's someone very near you. http://www.shortwaveschedule.com/index.php?freq=1584 has nothing on the frequency outside Japan, which to my ignorance sounds an unlikely instance of propagation.

What's the Polish/Eastern European population like in your neck of the woods?

I think that 1584kHz is still classified as an International Common Frequency, meaning that it isn't allocated to any specific country or countries but is available for any country to use for low power stations on a non-interfering basis.

It is currently used by four low power stations in the UK:

   

It is not listed as a current RSL by Ofcom but their site is terrible to navigate so, if it is a newly licenced community station, I can't find it.

Otherwise, of course, it could be a pirate but it is unusual for them not to use FM these days because it is so much simpler to set up.

Quite so, if no one else can hear it around the countryside maybe a walk round town with a portable would reveal the location if its a low powered pirate. They could be using a loop as a transmitter aerial, inefficient but it would work?

I don't think there is a large Polish community in Tyneside. It's almost certain that this is a distant transmitter because there is no indication of the presence of the station at the time I'm writing this, 3:35pm. It's worth mentioning the unknown station was only receivable when the Pilot radio receiver was connected to the frame aerial or with a set that has an internal aerial being positioned close to the tuned loop frame aerial.

Hi David.
If you are still using Varicap diodes as the "tuning medium" I'd suspect they could be acting as an FC and your hearing a shifted signal. I can sometimes hear 1548 but very weak and with lots of fading, never had an ident though.

Nothing earlier but now it's dark I'm picking up an 'east europe' language around 190m, just talking at the moment.
I only have domestic radios, I tried a few and the best was a Bush 72 with a long wire loft AE using the 'sensitive' connection, very weak but no noticible multi path fading.

My son lives in Poland so if I can get a recording (quality not good enough so far) I'll see if he can identify the language.

Hi Trevor,
I'm still using the BB510 varicap diodes. The arrangement is four diodes in series parallel to avoid the rectification of strong signals. It's 9pm and the mystery station has returned on 1584Khz. The sky is cloud free at the time of writing this. Also, there is a great of "chatter" on 1593Khz, the extreme end of the medium Waveband.
