Grey patches on Sony Bravia TV

Well went for the 40" same as we have.  Lured to the 49 which is smaller than the existing but still 8" inches wider.  Would have gone with a little shuffle but then SWMBO started on "... perhaps we could have a complete furniture move and do some decorating" .  OH! NO!  I'm only into replacing a Tele .  Phew!  think its worked for now

Hi.
Sony have been using Samsung "screens" for some time now and also some other panels from them too. Samsung do make good panels and the collaboration between the two manufacturers seems to work well.
Some of the early Bravia sets were criticised for flat pictures with poor definition and digital artefacts.
Oddly I have a 110v 32 inch Sony (brought in by a customer returning to the UK from the US) that is 10 years old and it is superb, I use it as a PC monitor and on HDMI, internally totally different to any Sony I have seen here.

Before we went flat panel we had a Sony CRT 32" Bravia but the problem was it was likely to give us both hernias when SWBO wanted it out for cleaning. Great set, beautiful picture and faultless for years.

This looks like a lot of TV for the money. No idea how good it really is but Richer Sounds have a decent reputation as a supplier:

One problem is that as you get bigger and bigger screens then older SD material looks worse and worse as you're too close to it. On a much bigger scale I remember seeing Fantasia 2000 in an Imax cinema. All of it was shot in Imax and looked great except for the Sorceror's Apprentice where they had just cleaned up the sequence from the original Fantasia. Although justified by the fame and quality of the material it inevitably looked a bit soft and grubby by comparison.

Hi Gary.
I worked for Sony for a number of years (90's) the range of sets were really good during that time, from the AE2 chassis the BE2 and the professional range. It did go wrong later on and their widescreen CRT's were noted for poor life. The early Bravia flat screen sets were poor too but they did improve quickly.
You may remember Sony had big problems a few short years ago and it was then they moved away from domestic sets and engaged the help of Samsung.
You will notice how much improved the new set will be, the pictures will be far sharper and have less in the way of digital artefacts.

Thays a good price Jeffrey, about £50 cheaper than John Lewis but they do give very good gurantees of 5 years.

We do have Virgin Media cable but I like backups and so have a roof aerial as well so the Freeview tuner is good to have.

Don't need the UHD as there isn't much content anyway and we don't buy discs, films or games.

That looks like a nice set too, for only £399. It really is quite astonishing what you can get for very reasonable prices. I know there's been a lot of inflation since then but a 25" colour set in 1967 cost around £300. That's at least £5000 in today's money.

The Richer Sounds set comes with a 6 year guarantee. probably to outdo John Lewis.

In fact, these long guarantees don't give you much beyond your legal rights. These last for up to 6 years from purchase. If you've bought from a reputable company then it shouldn't be hard to enforce your rights, even if the formal guarantee period is only 1 or 2 years.

It's never worth buying an extended guarantee of any kind. I know never is a strong word but they rarely if ever give you anything beyond your legal rights as a consumer.

So far, Panasonic appears to be the decent choice out there price wise. Sony are a case of Tolouse La Plot.
