A beat up old BSR motor

The specimen in my photos was pulled from an old deck in the late 1980s.

It is fitted to a heat pump and thermal battery and drives a small gear pump.
The motor has done an estimated 200,000 hours and out lasted its first heat pump my a matter of weeks.
In the second photo a little bit of the heat exchanger can be seen top right and hardened oil and grease clinging to the pump housing to the left of the motor itself.
The bronze bushes are not a problem as the pump is immersed and the motor not so there has to be a washer allowing the rotor to "float" on the washer and not so much the bushes giving almost no sideways force on the shaft as it would be if it were on a deck.
The motor is mounted in an inverted position in this use.
I am pretty sure I have another coil to fix it with.

Has anyone ever found one of these motors that has been working this long.

Hi Sounds like a "record", as I doubt any decks were run for that length of time even when left on inadvertently.
Your particular application may have helped though and there are no brushes to wear out on these motors.

The original pump was fitted to a very well engineered 6 volt motor with an output shaft the same size as a deck motor shaft. The brushes lasted a couple of months.
The input side of a magnetic clutch fits on the end. This part fits over a fixed dome containing the other half of the clutch. There are no moving parts that go through seals.
The moyor went "pop" and stopped dead with an open circuit coil. I robbed another coil from another deck motor that had been converted to run a Meccano set.
I was not about to fully dismantle the whole assembly so the coil and lams were changed. The new coil has fewer lams so so it was packed with washers. The motor is not quite powerful enough to trip the magnetic clutch but it does the job. The chilled home brewed beer flows again.

In the photo is an original 6 volt pump that is easier to see. From left to right there is the grey manifold, next is the brown gear pump, after that is the silver magnetic clutch and finally the 6 volt motor.

Hi.
Funny where you see these motors in use.
I've seen them used with Chemical pumps in static pressure washers.
Used as cooling fan motors in old British equipment.
I've even seen them in big old clocks.
Oh and an old washing machine as a drain pump motor, (Hoover keymatic?)

I have in the distant past used a 24 volt version in numbers when I worked in a place that made vending machines. These ones had the rotor spring loaded so that when power was not applied the rotor sprung away from the drive. It was done to stop the mechanics from "un-parking" so that the customer could pull a second product out. They were called something like inertia free.

More likely for the same reason that it was done in early 'automatic' TVs, such as the Ferguson Senator, to ensure that the motor was up to speed and capable of delivering maximum torque before it started its next duty of hauling  a conventional turret tuner from one preset position to the next ...

You are right Terry.
In the late 1970s I was given an old Phillips 405 telly that has a Paxolin sandwich octal connector on the back but no remote lead.
It had the same motor with the clutch to stop it spinning on after power is removed.
I scrapped it due to no BBC2.

I still have a vivid memory of the Earls Court Radio Show the year that these models - with their two spring steel strips twanged by buttons for tune and mute - were introduced.

Wherever you went there were people walking backwards off the stands with a remote in their hands to see how far away from the set they still worked! Why anybody should want to change channels from the end of the back garden, I do not know ...

It occurred to me afterwards that the logistics of planning the stand allocations for that show must have been very complicated.

With Thorn alone using around five trademarks, it would have not have looked good if someone walking back of the HMV stand, say, started changing channels on the set on the Ferguson stand and so on ...

The general hubbub of the show plus the use of four channels (two locally generated) tended to disguise and smother the clunking of the motor driven tuner but they must have quickly become a source of irritation in a quiet living room - particularly when they insisted on going the long way round from 1 to 9 (or whatever).

Those early remotes were affectionately known as a Pinger, at least they were up t'north where I was.
