Batteries for Beldray Electric Carpet Sweeper

This Sweeper, model BEL087FSFOB, uses NiMh rechargeable batteries fitted in the lower part of the handle, and neither Beldray nor their distributors supply the batteries or the charger.  Having been asked if I can repair a sweeper which was handed to me sans battery(ies), I have no idea what size or capacity cells are used, except that a nominal 6v supply is needed.  Does anyone have any idea what batteries are used in these and from where they may be sourced?

Thanks for the link, Alistair. I'll study it when I have a bit more time than at the moment, but I'm wondering if the battery is a special type, and, if available, would have to be purchased already installed in the lower handle. I may contact Beldray again about this.

Some advice! I was employed with the repair and servicing of industrial cleaning equipment for nearly 10 years.
I'd say that you should only use the specific batteries for sweepers. The reason being is loading especially under fault conditions can cause the batteries to overheat. Take mind if it's customers property not yours and something goes wrong and a battery blows or overheats it's you that is in trouble. Perhaps I'm teaching you to suck eggs but in such cases you need to use the specific part. We found some things were deliberately made NLA as there were issues with them. Any doubt hand it back.

You're no doubt right, Trevor. The Sweeper belongs to someone I've known for many years, but if Beldray or someone else can't or won't supply the correct part, then it's not repairable!

Earlier today I contacted Beldray by eMail. and they replied saying that they do supply the 'Lower extension pole with built-n battery' (in other words the lower part of the handle) for £4.99. It has to be ordered by phone (0161 9342240) . At the moment I don't know if there is a carriage chargem but, as I suspect that the battery fitted is a 'special' then I'll go down that route

I've now ordered the 'Lower Extension Pole' (£6.49 inc. VAT & Carriage).  This should arrive by Thursday, so the Sweeper should be operational by the weekend, ABW.

Sound like a good price, not a rip off for rechargeable batteries. Its only a couple of pints and crisps.

That is very cheap for an OEM battery and its housing. They must be a reasonable company to deal with.
