Hotpoint 9540W washing machine problem.

I got some genuine Hotpoint replacement laminated brushes. Since fitting them, everything now seems normal, although I'm not entirely convinced that it was only the brushes. I think I wasn't waiting long enough for things to happen!

If your not convinced Dave try re-fitting the old ones. I'll wager the problem returns!

I could try refitting the old ones and I did think about it, but because the new brushes are a tighter fit than the old ones, I didn't bother. I'll think about it!

Come to think of it another thing that comes to mind was on some of the industrial vacuums I used to do, on the ones that had two speeds.
Often on the low speed they wouldn't start but they would on high speed but would run on low speed if started on high. It was always down to brushes when worn, why I didn't remember after your initial post beats me. At least it's fixed

One oddity with certain Hotpoint models. Between the two heater element connections, a thermal fuse in a protective pouch resides. It slides into a tube between the element bars as an added protection in the event the thermostat goes futt and runs the element to destruction. Often the first you know about the thermal fuse blowing, and they do go with nothing more than old age, is either the selector gets part way around the program and then stops, or certain functions just stop working. Easy enough to change out, crimped fittings terminate the cables to the thermal fuse, and a first port of call in the event of issues.

Cant see the thermal fuse being the OP's problem especially after replacing the motor brushes.
Mind his problem was on the initial run of the motor to distribute the load in the drum evenly, a couple of turns of the drum each way on low speed!

If your in there and can get to it, best change it up as they go with age. On my newer HP the fuse is wired directly into the electronics control board rather than the selector on the older models so who knows what it's signalling in there.
