Free W10 upgrade !!

In a weak moment I went for it and it installed.  Left me with no USB ports at all.  Fortunately I had a leaded mouse and a USB to PS2 adaptor that plugged into the 'combo' socket at the back.

Told ne that the drivers for USB were not compatible (this after telling me that my PC had been checked as OK for W10 upgrade).  Reverted post haste to W7.  Cost me a bit of time though.

If I was contemplating a W10 upgrade I'd image the hard drive before doing so. Makes reversing the process a lot easier.

How would that help you if you were left with no mouse and kbd? W7 went back just fine I'm pleased to say and it did a Check Disk on the way which was needed.

What software do you use to image a drive? Not used any of that for a decade and more and then it was never an exact bit by bit copy. Maybe if you do it to an external drive you can get the bias to boot from it for a reinstate? Still need a mouse or kbd that can connect to a PS2 port if the USB is down.

You swap the drive and let the PC boot from the image. It should do this without complaint. If you're really fussy you do a test boot from an image to prove that the imaging process really does work.

There are many drive imaging programs, both free and paid for.

Yes! but a lot of effort for me pulling the PC out of its cubby hole, taking the covers off and swapping but as you say a sure fire way of getting back where you were. I just took the lazy way but can say getting back to W7 was effective from MS. Of course you would have had to call in a Tech if you didn't have a cable mouse that would work on a PS2 socket and the know how to use it.

Had a message from MS setting me up for another go and that got cancelled post haste. They don't give up easy do they.

Thanks Jeffery but after no doubt a clean install of W7 MS have closed the loop hole of uninstalling Kb3035583. you no longer get the Uninstall option of PC Advisor and you cant delete it either.

   

I have installed the standalone GWX Control Panel (after Creating a System Restore Point of course) and gone through the boxes on that so we will see how it goes.

I upgraded to W10 some time ago, and, apart from neither of my two 10 year old Scanners not now working (Not compatible with W10 seemingly) I've experienced no problems. PC is one of the HP Compaq models bought from 'unreal dave' last autumn. I still have a W7 disc so could revert to that I guess, though an article in 'Computer Active' magazine dated 20 Jan-4 Feb 2016 is headed 'Stop using Windows 7' claims that Microsoft, according to their Chief marketing Officer, Chris Capposella, say that continuing to use W7 is 'at your own risk, at your own peril'

You can get cheap hardware-based HDD cloning devices from the likes of CPC, which should (in theory at least) make a bit-accurate copy. Plug current drive and new, blank drive in and press 'go' - as easy as that.
